How can people find the Courage to create a harmonious world? How much Courage does it take people to allow themself to be vulnerable and let their partner see their authentic selves? How much Courage does it take to live peacefully? Do you have the courage to go to the bottom of your soul?

The Courage to Develop begins by letting the reader know May's belief is the ability to produce power. May define Courage as the foundation of psychological virtues. He notes that people had to live with the knowledge that the nuclear bomb was a threatening presence in the background. Then as now, we are at a crossroads that could end the world or the Courage to live harmoniously.

Courage allows human beings to choose a new way of being. May discusses the ability to confront challenges. Courage can give us the purpose to change the world in some small way. Courage allows a person to become authentic. The ability to find ourselves, not just conform to others.

May sees the United States as a very violent culture. Physical Courage allows one to stand up against violence, act on the Courage of empathy, and show care for others.
