While we eat chocolate sparingly, who knew it could be healthy?

Chocolate delights we have craved as a guilty pleasure also is healthy. It's hard to find food that looks that great and is healthy also. Chocolate is rich in a plant-based chemical called flavonoids. Flavonoids in plants serve as a protective mechanism. Research shows that flavanols and antioxidants help vascular health by lowering blood pressure, improving blood flow to the brain and heart, and making blood platelets less sticky and able to clot.

Chocolate also contains many minerals that the human body needs. Some of the minerals include;

  1. calcium
  2. phosphorous
  3. magnesium
  4. iron
  5. zinc
  6. copper

These minerals have roles in various biological functions, including growth, bone formation, metabolism, and oxygen transport within the blood.

Chocolate has chemicals that can help mental health. Dark chocolate has endorphins. Endorphins are a natural opiate and help people feel good. It also has serotonin, a chemical in the brain that helps with depression. Chocolate may also increase the production of serotonin in the gut, which boosts immunity.
